Lee Wiley was the first jazz singer to record a full album (eight songs in the '78' days) dedicated to the music of one composer; her "songbooks" preceded Ella Fitzgerald's by more than 15 years. The greatest recordings of her career were these four projects, the first two of which are on this Audiophile reissue. Wiley, who had an introverted and quietly straightforward yet sensuous (and somewhat smoldering) style, is heard singing eight songs apiece by the Gershwins and Cole Porter. Her accompaniment includes all-star groups headed by pianist Joe Bushkin and trumpeter Max Kaminsky (which include tenor-saxophonist Bud Freeman, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell and on four songs Fats Waller), a quartet with Bushkin and trumpeter Bunny Berigan, and Paul Weston's Orchestra. Wiley's renditions of such songs as "How Long Has This Been Going On," "I've Got A Crush On You," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Let's Do It" and "Easy To Love" are both memorable and haunting. This reissue is a gem as is the followup Audiophile release of Rodgers & Hart and Harold Arlen songs. ~Scott Yanow

Lenny Cooper's career is aimed squarely at the hillbilly mud-bogging crowd, who like their country mixed in with some urban beats and a little bit of rap, and even Cooper describes himself as an accidental recording artist. Cooper grew up in rural North Carolina, where his passion was mud bogging with his friends. At the age of 17, he wrote a song, "Mud Digger," about his favorite pastime, made a home recording of it, and posted it to YouTube, then went back to his life. The song began to rack up views, and attracted the notice of Colt Ford, who signed Cooper to his Average Joe's label. A debut album, Diesel Fuel, was released by the imprint in 2012, followed by Mud Dynasty a year later in 2013. Cooper continued to find success with his third album, The Grind, on which he collaborated with Ford, Bubba Sparxxx, and Bucky Covington. Released in 2014, The Grind reached number 17 on the Billboard country chart and number 13 on the rap chart. He followed up in late 2016 with his fourth LP, Dirtified, whose lead single, "Keep It So Country," featured Georgia country rapper Young Gunner.

Lesa Hudson's 8th studio album "life in the key of lesa" is sure to please music lovers of a wide variety of genres. Never one to pigeon hole herself into specific genres, Lesa intentionally chooses to write music flavored with a variety of genres that melt into her own special brand of music. She's also not afraid to take chances nor does she shy away from the unconventional. While the music on this CD is definitely secular, Lesa chose to include a distinctly praise & worship song because writing Christian based music is also a part of who she is. And not only does this CD showcase Lesa's unique ability to write music that reflects real life, her powerhouse vocal ability will dazzle as she tackles the variety of genres presented in this music.
Lesa is an award winning songwriter with 6 #1 songs to her credit. She travels all over the southeast with her band The Rick Strickland Band, and also performs many duo performances with her music partner, Rick Strickland.

Triple-threat Leslie Odom, Jr. is a Tony Award-winning performer best known for his roles in the TV series Smash and the original cast of Broadway's Hamilton. He's also a charting solo recording artist. Born in 1981 in Queens, New York, Odom was raised in Philadelphia. A lifelong performer, he made his Broadway debut as a replacement in Rent at the age of 17. He went on to study drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and relocated to Los Angeles after graduating in 2003. It wasn't long before he began accumulating guest spots on television shows, including Gilmore Girls and the short-lived Kevin Hart series The Big House (2004), and recurring roles on dramas such as CSI: Miami and Vanished. In 2012, Odom earned a part in the Broadway musical Leap of Faith and appeared on the cast recording. Later that year, he landed the role of Sam Strickland on the NBC drama Smash, a show fittingly about Broadway performers competing for parts. Fellow cast member Megan Hilty had been a year behind him at Carnegie Mellon. Smash ran for two seasons and resulted in the album Bombshell, a recording of the Marilyn Monroe musical from within the show's story. Released by Columbia in 2013, the pseudo Broadway cast recording featured music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman. In the meantime, Odom married actress Nicolette Robinson and, amid more television work, began workshopping Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton, playing Aaron Burr. Inspired by Ron Chernow's biography of U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton, it was conceived as a musical version of history that would feature an ethnically diverse cast and part hip-hop songbook. In 2014, Odom also self-released his debut solo album, Leslie Odom, Jr., a set of vocal jazz covers of show tunes and popular song. The singer/actor/dancer originated the role of Hamilton's Aaron Burr on Broadway in 2015 and went on the win a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, even beating out Miranda as Alexander Hamilton. (Miranda won Tonys for the book, original score, and musical, as well as a Pulitzer Prize for Drama among other honors for the blockbuster.) The hit cast album Hamilton: An American Musical topped the Billboard Cast Albums and Rap Albums charts. Odom performed on over half of the tracks. In June 2016, S-Curve released an updated version of his debut LP that cut three songs and added four more, including Kosma-Mercer's "Autumn Leaves" and Willie Nelson's "The Party's Over." The re-release hit number one on Billboard's jazz chart and made the Billboard 200. Saying that he got requests for a Christmas album "a few times a week," he followed it up later that year with Simply Christmas.

The gospel-tinged and decidedly soul-inflected 1963-1968 blues sides of Little Johnny Taylor on Galaxy Records benefitted from marvelous horn-powered arrangements by Ray Shanklin that brilliantly pushed Taylor's melismatic vocals. Naturally, the impassioned "Part Time Love" is included, along with the Bobby Bland-tinged mid-tempo groover "You'll Need Another Favor," a delicious "Since I Found a New Love," and the blistering "You Win, I Lose." Seventeen tracks in all, many of them bolstered by Arthur Wright's stinging guitar. ~by Bill Dahl

Ariana Grande is an American singer and actress. She began her career in the Broadway musical 13, before landing the role of Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television series Victorious in 2009. After four seasons, the show ended, and Grande starred on the spinoff, Sam & Cat, which ended in 2014. She has also appeared in other theatre, television and film roles and lent her voice to animated television and films.
Grande's music career began with the soundtrack Music from Victorious (2011). She signed a recording contract with Republic Records and released her debut studio album, Yours Truly in 2013, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. The album's lead single, "The Way", reached the top-ten of the Billboard Hot 100, with critics comparing her wide vocal range to Mariah Carey. Her second studio album, My Everything (2014), also reached number one in the United States. With the singles "Problem", "Break Free", "Bang Bang" and "Love Me Harder" from that album, she spent 34 continuous weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and had the most top 10 singles of any artist in 2014. In 2015, she is promoting My Everything with her first international tour titled The Honeymoon Tour and currently guest-starring in Fox comedy-horror TV series Scream Queens.
Some of Grande's accolades include New Artist of the Year at the 2013 American Music Awards, Music Business Association's Breakthrough Artist of the Year, "Best Pop Video" at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, "Best Song" and "Best Female" at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Saxophonist John Tchicai was best known for his time in New York during the height of the '60s free jazz explosion, but he actually spent the majority of his career advancing the cause of avant-garde jazz in Northern Europe. Tchicai was born April 28, 1936, in Copenhagen to a Danish mother and Congolese father; he began playing violin at age ten, switched to both clarinet and alto sax at 16, and focused on the latter at Denmark's Conservatory of Music. In the late '50s, Tchicai began making the rounds of the North European jazz scene, which was quick to pick up on the early innovations of the American avant-garde. In 1963, he moved to New York City to immerse himself in the epicenter of free jazz. He hooked up with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry, eventually co-founding the New York Contemporary Five with them; he was also a founding member of the New York Art Quartet with Roswell Rudd and Milford Graves. Tchicai also recorded with Albert Ayler (on New York Eye and Ear Control), the Jazz Composers Guild, and John Lennon (Life with the Lions), and most importantly appeared on John Coltrane's legendary free jazz landmark Ascension. After a whirlwind three years, Tchicai returned to Denmark in 1966 and founded a large workshop ensemble called Cadentia Nova Danica, which he led until 1971. Shortly thereafter, he cut back on performing to concentrate on teaching full-time. In 1977, he returned to the studio, leading a fairly steady series of recording dates into the '80s, when he switched to tenor sax and joined Pierre Dorge's New Jungle Orchestra.
In 1990, Tchicai received a lifetime grant for jazz performance from the Danish Ministry of Culture; and the following year he relocated to California's Bay Area, where he and his keyboardist wife Margriet founded John Tchicai & the Archetypes and the John Tchicai Unit, which both recorded during the '90s. After the turn of the millennium he returned to Europe and moved to Southern France; in June 2012 Tchicai suffered a brain hemorrhage, and although he reportedly began physiotherapy, he died in Perpignan, France in October of that year. John Tchicai was 76 years old. ~ Steve Huey
Personnel: John Tchicai (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet); Alex Weiss (tenor saxophone; alto saxophone; percussion); Garrison Fewell (guitar, percussion, bow); Dmitry Ishenko (bass); Ches Smith (drums)

Although we often think of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova material as a kind of jazz, it isn't really, although he was familiar with the genre and often used its inflections and moods. With this album, however, Jobim definitely becomes jazzy. Guitarist Mario Adnet set out to do two things - keep the Brazilian roots of the music faithfully intact, but also give jazz arrangements, including horns, to the pieces, some of which have rarely been heard. He's succeeded beautifully in both aims. His charts capture the subtle melodies and gorgeous sprung rhythms, but offer a full sound, with room for improvisation. Kudos, too, to the band, who play superbly throughout, while the singing is understated (even that of Joyce on "Paulo Voo Livre"), keeping the focus firmly on the instrumentalists. Adnet is obviously a scholar of Jobim's work, and a passionate fan, with a deep desire to bring more people to Jobim's music, and to highlight the jazz elements in it. It becomes more than an academic exercise, and the lulling, often beautiful sound is filled with little inventions that propel it along.

You're All I Need is the second studio album by soul musicians Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, released in August 1968 on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Highlighted by three hit singles written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson (who composed two of the four hit songs on the first Gaye/Terrell duets LP, United), You're All I Need was recorded throughout 1966 and 1967 and features two Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits, "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By". It peaked at #60 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Chart. You're All I Need was the two singers' final collaboration effort, as Terrell would turn ill following recording, before succumbing to a brain tumor in 1970.
The album was recorded in 1966 and 1967 during the time Gaye and Terrell's first collaboration album United was released. After recording You're All I Need, Tammi Terrell collapsed onstage while performing with Gaye at the Hampden-Sydney College homecoming in Virginia. She was later diagnosed with a brain tumor, and could no longer record nor perform live. According to Gaye, the final Gaye/Terrell album, Easy, would be completed by having Valerie Simpson fill in for Tammi Terrell on most of the album's songs, and having Gaye overdub archived Terrell solo tracks for two tracks. Simpson vehemently denies this and says they had to record Tammi's vocals in pieces in order to get the project done.
Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson produced the singles "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", "Keep On Loving Me Honey," and "You're All I Need to Get By." Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol produced the rhythm tracks and Terrell's vocal for "You Ain't Livin' 'Til You're Lovin'," with Ashford and Simpson completing the production and supervising Gaye's vocal. Fuqua and Bristol also produced "I'll Never Stop Loving You Baby" while Motown CEO Berry Gordy, Jr.'s brother Robert Gordy produced "I Can't Help But Love You." Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol produced "Come On and See Me," "Baby Dont'cha Worry," "Give In, You Just Can't Win," "When Love Comes Knocking At Your Heart," "That's How It Is (Since You've Been Gone)," and "Memory Chest" as Tammi Terrell solo tracks in 1965 and 1966, and had Gaye overdub his vocals to them to create duet versions.

A singer and songwriter gifted with a strong, clear voice, Jillian Edwards was born in Dallas, Texas in 1989. Edwards developed a passion for music in her teens, and began her performing career when she was a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, singing at local coffeehouses and landing a spot opening for the Civil Wars shortly before the duo's career took off. In 2009, Edwards took her career to the next level by recording a six-song EP, Galaxies and Such, which was soon followed by the eight-song Songbird, both of which she released herself. The response was encouraging enough that in 2011 Edwards moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and cut a second EP, the seven-song Headfirst, which she once again released herself. Edwards stepped up her touring schedule, headlining at house concerts and small venues and playing larger stages opening for the likes of Drew & Ellie Holcomb, David Ramirez, Ben Rector, and Josh Garrels. Headfirst eventually rose to the top of the digital singer/songwriter charts, knocking her old friends the Civil Wars out of the number one spot in the process. In 2012, Edwards married another talented musician, Will Franklin Chapman of the group Colony House, and they launched a side project called the Inlaws that also featured Will's brother Caleb Chapman. In 2013, Edwards was invited by Ellie Holcomb to co-write a track for Holcomb's album With You Now, and later contributed vocals to the project; Edwards also performed backing vocals on Deep Roots, an album of bluegrass tunes by Steven Curtis Chapman (Will and Caleb's dad). In 2014, Edwards returned to the spotlight with her first full-length album, Daydream, produced by Joe Causey. ~ Mark Deming

Stage and television actress/singer Megan Hilty is best known for her turns on Broadway as Glinda in Wicked and Doralee Rhodes in 9 to 5: The Musical, and for her role as Ivy Lynn on NBC's musical drama Smash. Born in Bellevue, Washington, Hilty started her vocal training at age 12 and studied at Redmond's Washington Academy of Performing Arts Conservatory High School. After graduating from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, she moved to New York City, making her Broadway debut in August 2004 as the standby for Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in the Oz-themed musical Wicked, which was based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Hilty took over the role in 2005 and after ending her run in 2006, played Glinda in Wicked's first national tour and in a sit-down production in Los Angeles throughout 2007 and 2008. Late that year, Hilty joined the production of the musical adaptation of the film 9 to 5 in the role of executive secretary Doralee Rhodes, which was played in the 1980 film by Dolly Parton. With songs composed and written by Parton, the production included Hilty's Wicked collaborators actress Stephanie J. Block and director Joe Mantello, along with Allison Janney and Marc Kudisch. For her performance as Doralee, Hilty earned acting nominations from the Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Drama League Awards, and the Drama Desk Awards. At the same time, Hilty was establishing herself on the stage, she was also accumulating several television credits, with parts on shows ranging from children's fare such as The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Phineas and Ferb to comedies like American Dad!, Family Guy, and Louie to dramas including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Desperate Housewives. Starting in Feburary 2012, Hilty starred as veteran stage actress Ivy Lynn on Smash, a musical-within-a-musical that followed the development of a Broadway production about Marilyn Monroe; one of the songs she and co-star Katharine McPhee performed, "Let Me Be Your Star," was nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy that year. Early in 2013, Smash's second season premiered, and Hilty's debut album It Happens All the Time - which featured songs by written Damien Rice, Ne-Yo, and Carrie Underwood - arrived shortly after.

Le migliori is an album by Italian singers Mina and Adriano Celentano, issued on November 11, 2016. The first single Amami Amami was released on October 21, 2016. In March of 2015, rumors began of another collaboration between Adriano Celentano and Mina, especially after the message he posted on his blog to congratulate her on her 75th birthday. In the following months these rumors became more pervasive until it was officially confirmed on October 20, 2015 that the two artists would indeed be releasing an album of new songs together. At the time of the original announcement, the album was scheduled to be released in the spring of 2016. Eighteen years after their extremely successful first album of duets, Mina Celentano, these two legends of Italian music once again were working together. As reported by the Corriere della Sera, recording would begin in early summer 2015 and would take place in both Adriano Celentano's studio in Galbiate and Mina's studio in Lugano. The official release date of Le Migliori was finally set for November 11, 2016.
